For comments, choose specific posts, all posts (including future ones), or whatever you publish next.
Keywords that match the way people type
Contains or exact
“Contains” fires when the keyword appears as a whole word anywhere in the comment, so “send me the GUIDE please” works, but the keyword “AI” does not fire on “again”. “Exact” needs the whole comment to be the keyword.
Case and emoji do not matter
GUIDE, guide and Guide all match. Emoji keywords work too, and so do look-alike letters some keyboards produce.
Exclusions win
Add words that should never trigger a DM, such as a competitor’s name. If an excluded word appears, no DM is sent, even with “Any comment” switched on.
One DM per person per post
By default each person gets one DM per post, however many times they comment. Switch on “DM on every comment” if you want each matching comment answered.
What the DM can hold
Text and up to three link buttons
Up to 1,000 characters, or 640 when the DM has buttons (Meta’s limit for a message with buttons). Each button has a label and a link, and taps are tracked so you see clicks and CTR.
Their name in the message
Insert {first_name} or {username} and each person sees their own.
Variations
Write up to five versions of the DM and one is picked at random for each person, so replies do not all read the same.
A public reply too
Optionally reply under the comment, such as “Sent you a DM!”, so others see it works and comment as well.
The limits, stated plainly
These come from Instagram, so every tool has them.
- A comment allows one private reply, within 7 days of the comment. More messages need the person to reply to you first.
- Nobody can be messaged cold. A DM only goes to someone who commented, replied or messaged you.
- Meta allows 750 private replies an hour per account. Past that, Talkspike queues the rest and sends them as the limit frees up.
- Your Instagram account must be Business or Creator, not Personal.
